How "Buffalo" Rewires your Brain and Teaches Tolerance   It's not very often a party game comes around that's undeniably fun, fantastically hilarious, perfectly brainy, and changes your brain to think beyond gender and racial stereotypes. We're proud to say Buffalo is that game. The rules are simple; draw one noun card and one adjective card. Be the first player to shout out an example of a real or fictional person that fits those attributes and you keep those cards as points. T Read More

Discussion on the long term neurological effects of concussions has been brought into the spotlight with recent events in the news. Many former NFL players are being diagnosed with CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy) a degenerative neurological disease which manifests with symptoms such as memory loss, depression and dementia. CTE is caused by defective Tau proteins that form tangles and disrupt messages between brain cells (a pathology that is similar to that of Alzheimer's Disease). Studies Read More

Brain Benefits of Working Puzzles
By Paulette
11/12/2012 12:00:00 AM
Puzzles were a prominent part of my childhood. During the winter months, our dining room table often held a large piece of leftover wall paneling covered with jigsaw puzzles in progress. I would sit with my mom and try to find pieces that would fit. It was a little daunting as a child, but something that made me feel grown up. Im sure I had my own puzzles to work, but I enjoyed the social aspect of sitting at a table with family and doing them together. My mother still does puzzles today. She ha Read More

You've all heard the phrase "laughter is the best medicine". Well there is some truth in it. Laughter alleviates stress, boosts the immune system, increases learning and memory capability and in some cases, reduces pain. So finding things that make you laugh is very important. Being with groups of friends that you have fun with usually encourages laughter, as does watching a funny movie or television show. You can also find humor in books. We just started carrying the Robert Benson books F for Read More

Discover Some Brain Benefits of Reading
By Paulette
10/11/2012 9:01:00 AM
As the weather starts to get cooler, I feel the pull of my couch and the desire to curl up with a good book. In a previous blog I mentioned that reading literature on a regular basis engages the hippocampus, the part of the brain responsible for memory and learning. Research has also shown that reading narrative fiction not only activates the language centers of the brain, its descriptive language stimulates other sensory areas. Recently, I stumbled across an NPR story about a literature profess Read More

By Paulette

It takes very little to trigger a song in my head. In fact, there's almost always music playing in there. My day usually has a soundtrack, although it doesn't necessarily align with what's happening. Many times it's an obnoxious song that I'd rather not sing. Do you walk around with a song lyrics bouncing around in your brain? You could put them to use playing Spontuneous. This fun filled party game challenges your ability to recall song lyrics. And the more trigger words you can come up with th Read More

Meditation for Kids
By Paulette
8/24/2012 9:00:00 AM
Using meditation with children is not something that's ever crossed my mind, but an article in the most recent issue of Scientific American Mind revealed that there are classrooms in Canada and the U.S. that have incorporated it into their curriculum. A program called MindUP, conceived by Goldie Hawn, has had great success in Vancouver area elementary schools and is catching on in other countries as well. One of the main benefits that educators, administrators and researchers are finding is that Read More
