Brain Benefits of Working Puzzles
By Paulette
11/12/2012 12:00:00 AM
Puzzles were a prominent part of my childhood. During the winter months, our dining room table often held a large piece of leftover wall paneling covered with jigsaw puzzles in progress. I would sit with my mom and try to find pieces that would fit. It was a little daunting as a child, but something that made me feel grown up. Im sure I had my own puzzles to work, but I enjoyed the social aspect of sitting at a table with family and doing them together. My mother still does puzzles today. She ha Read More

Our Brain Workshop crew creates some cool, brainy board games and puzzles for our store. But they are also careful not to neglect physical activity and coordination, which are just as important to brain fitness as maintaining memory and developing critical thinking skills.     If you're not familiar with Chinese jump rope, let me give you a quick description: Two players (the Enders) stand a few feet apart, facing each other while keeping tension on the rope with their ankles. The En Read More

Memories of Mastermind
By Paulette

I remember sitting on the floor in my Aunt's house playing Candyland, Life and Monopoly with my cousins. Because my cousins were older, I learned to play games that were sometimes a stretch for my 6 year old brain. We spent hours playing these games. No one talked about the brain benefits of playing games; they were simply a way to keep kids entertained. But looking back, I learned a lot by playing them. I learned about strategy, following instructions, counting money, new vocabulary and waitin Read More

Plugged-In Syndrome
By Paulette
7/31/2012 9:10:00 AM
Last week we experienced a power outage at our corporate headquarters. Storms in the early morning knocked out power all over Chicago. As a result we experienced a brown-out at our office, meaning we had partial power. Our server was down so the internet was out, everyone's computer was running low on battery power, our phone system was down and we had no air. Needless to say it was an odd day. We pondered aloud and bemoaned our dependence on technology. We were able to rig up the system to get Read More

Ping pong - de-stress & get a brain workout
By Paulette
6/7/2012 10:01:00 AM
I was talking to a friend recently about what she does to stimulate creativity and relieve stress. She loves to play ping pong. She said she loses herself in the game and those nagging worries and stressful thoughts disappear for a while. It also gives her time to connect to the family and friends that she plays with. Ping pong, or table tennis as it's sometimes referred to, has gained some mainstream popularity in the past few years. Table tennis clubs are popping up across the country. Some ev Read More
