The Geeks' Guide to World Domination

Garth Sundem's book The Geeks' Guide to World Domination. Sounds like a list of To Do's in order to exact nerdy revenge on every popular kid who was mean to us in school. However, it is actually a helpful tome of geeky knowledge for nerds and non-nerds alike. In his introduction, Sundem admits that it is just as much a book for the less geeky out there, who need a ticket into the increasingly popular world of geekdom. Because, as many of the biggest geeks out there have said (Bill Gates amongst them) the geeks are going to be ruling the show someday soon. This book simultaneously provides nerds with a nostalgic look at their own nerdiness and a chance to round out their geek credentials while giving the geeky-challenged a way to save themselves a spot in the "Geek World Order." The geekiness starts out early, when Sundem explains that the book has 314.15 information slots in its awesomely two-columned pages. The book goes on to tout an impressive vault of just that right kind of geeky trivia that makes nerds so loved in their own circles and rather annoying in others. Some of the awesome information includes Sudoku strategies, true conspiracies, statistics of real life pirates, and so much more. Some of my favorite segments include seven martial arts moves anyone can do without harming themselves. It provides readers with easy-to-follow instructions on performing these maneuvers without breaking something or looking silly. Another great information slot explains five different thought experiments utilized by big thinkers including Einstein, Searle, and Schr̦dinger (yes, the cat experiment). And probably my favorite of all is a quick tutorial on the creation of chain mail. Personally, I know that I could use chain mail armor in my everyday life, and after reading this section, I am very eager to hunt down the rings needed for creating some for myself. As the back indicates, this book is intended to provide geeks with "everything you need to achieve nirvana," and "nongeeks... the last chance to save yourselves." This book provides everyone with the secrets to winning bar bets, defeating classic video games, communicating in Morse Code, shadow puppets and even how to dance. Truly this is every geek's greatest handbook; it contains everything a nerd could ever want or need to know that he/she had not already figured out. But nerd or not, everyone should pick up this book to learn how to become a member of the Geeky Elite. Review by BrainCoach Nayt
