Questions with Kate - All About Morphology

We had the opportunity to hear from Kate, the creator of one of our new products Morphology, and find out how she came up with this addicting game! Marbles: You started working on Morphology in 2002. What prompted you to start designing a board game? Kate: I grew up playing games with my family during summer nights at the lake and snowy winter evenings at home. This night happened to be a snowy night in Minnesota and I was together with friends. We wanted to play a game that felt creative but didn't really have anything that fit the bill. We combined jenga sticks, pente beads and opened a Spanish/English dictionary. We started to build words using the sticks and beads. I thought it was a really interesting idea for a game and asked them if I could continue to work on it. I started to prototype without really knowing where I was headed. I started with a sample of different shapes and had about 50 words written on the back of old business cards. I would invite friends over and play a version of what would eventually become Morphology. I realized after one night of playing when a friend called me to talk to me about how he would have built "butterfly" differently that I had an idea that captured people's imaginations and kept them thinking the next day. It was inspiring. I prototyped Morphology over 100 times, watching friends and family play. Education for me has been a key component of what I've done. As an undergrad at Macalester College in MN, I was encouraged to question everything and think outside what I knew to be true. I think that's how the game was invented-looking at what I knew to be true about games and thinking, I wonder if I could do something different? When I was at The Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College, I worked with classmates to develop a business plan to understand how to take the idea I had and share it beyond the 20 prototypes I had made. We had time to interview people in the industry and learn how to make my dream a reality. Marbles: What inspires you about Morphology? Kate: I received an email from someone who said that the creativity in their family was growing because of Morphology-another parent said his son with Aspergers loves this game and it was one of the first games they could play together. A college student wrote to me and said that it's her and her friend's favorite game. I've received emails from people who use their own house pieces' and have added different rules into the game-one family takes it to restaurants and plays without the board while they are waiting for their food. I think this game has the capacity to go so many different directions and I want to have the time and the ability to follow all of the places where it can make an impact. I want Morphology to inspire friends and family to spend more time together laughing and having fun. There are so many places we can go with this game. Marbles: What was your reaction to winning the Games magazine Party Game of the Year top Nominee award? Kate: This was amazing. It's exciting to have a game that is recognized by such a prestigious magazine. This is an award and a magazine I grew up with and it's amazing to be included in its issue! Marbles: What's next? Kate: For now, I want to focus on Morphology and use it as a platform for expansion. We've started to prototype a Jr. Morphology edition; we're looking at a magnetic version and are contemplating a travel version. As long as we can make people happy and inspire people to be creative, we'll keep inventing! Marbles: What do you like best about working with Marbles? Kate: Everyone I have met at Marbles believes in their products and in the concept. The stores look like fantastic places to play and work and I think the Marbles staff is as committed as we are to offering great products which meet their mission.
