New study links brain proteins to ADHD symptoms

A study published in the current issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, which took 9 years to complete, provides "the first definitive proof that patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have lower-than-normal levels of the proteins that regulate our experiences of motivation and reward." Described in Globe Life, the study helps explain why inattention, reduced motivation, and susceptibility to drug abuse and obesity are all linked to ADHD. It appears that all these issues may be linked to deficits in the brain's dopamine-regulated reward system. The article notes that, "although the research supports the continued use of stimulant medications that raise dopamine and increase attention - a common treatment for ADHD - they also suggest 'interventions to enhance the saliency of school and work tasks to improve performance.' " It's also important for those with ADHD to find ways to work on attention, focus and concentration. The Marbles team has put together a list of ADD/ADHD Related Product Recommendations. Please review our recommendations with your physician/therapist, and we encourage you to make an appointment with one of our Brain Coaches to discuss the optimal products for your needs or those of your family member or loved one.
