Memories of Mastermind

I remember sitting on the floor in my Aunt's house playing Candyland, Life and Monopoly with my cousins. Because my cousins were older, I learned to play games that were sometimes a stretch for my 6 year old brain. We spent hours playing these games. No one talked about the brain benefits of playing games; they were simply a way to keep kids entertained. But looking back, I learned a lot by playing them. I learned about strategy, following instructions, counting money, new vocabulary and waiting my turn. The social learning and educational benefits were huge. When I was six, my grandpa introduced me to Mastermind. It was different from any other game I had ever played. It seemed like I was being given the privilege to learn a grown-up game. It wasn't easy at first, but I was determined to beat my Grandpa and other family members. I eventually did become good at the game and have very fond memories of those evenings of play at the kitchen table. Based on what I hear from customers, many people have a similar connection with the game. So it's great that we have it back in our inventory rotation. It's an awesome game for adults, but it's also a perfect game for teaching children planning, reasoning and strategy skills as they try to crack the code set by the codemaker. Using the clues given by the codemaker, the codebreaker must deduce the color and position of each of the four pegs in the code. The object is to break the code on as few tries as possible. Play a series of games and keep a tally of points to determine who the Mastermind is.
