Beating the Winter Blahs

I don't get depressed during the winter months, but I do experience what I refer to as the winter blahs (not blue, just blah). I have to fight the urge to stay on of my couch and watch movies all night instead of going out. Many of us have the tendency to reduce our social activity during the winter. It's too cold, it's dark out and watching television just seems easier. There are fairly well-known ways to combat the blah feelings, or even depression that winter brings on. Exercise, light-box therapy, supplements are a few that we hear about whenever winter approaches. Changing up your routine is another one. Here are some suggestions: Have fun with food. Creating a theme night and inviting friends over can be fun and break the monotony. Try cooking something fun and spicy that reminds you of someplace warm or have an indoor picnic. Choose a cookbook that you would like to make recipes from or make a new soup each week. You can have your friends bring things as well maybe even stipulating it has to be something they've never made before. Read. It sort of goes along with your desire to be sedentary, but gives your brain a workout. Many areas in the brain that are connected to the senses and to movement are stimulated simply by reading about an action, feeling or taste. Some people choose this time to read dense, Russian, classics, which is great, but if that seems a bit daunting, you may also want to choose titles that are often labeled in the summer as "beach reads". You can also choose lighter stories or travel essays if you need a little lift. Take a fun class. Whether it's learning a new skill or honing and old one, classes are a great way to get out of the house, interact socially and stimulate your brain. Dancing, writing, cooking, improv are all creative pursuits that can help you focus on something positive and get you off of your couch. If you are planning any foreign travel during the year, now might bea good time to do some language training as well. Host game nights. Social interaction is a key component in brain fitness. Invite some friends over to play some old favorites, or challenge yourselves with some new ones. Laughter is also a good tactic for chasing away the blues and game nights usually inspire a lot of laughter.
