November 17th, 2014 will go down in Marbles history as a heated game of Rummikub determined the winner before moving on to the tournament at the Chicago Toy and Game Fair for a spot in the International Championship.
Meet the four spirited contestants; Ashley, mother of three, Scott and Val, a happily married couple, and Old Orchard store manager Peter. Four worthy opponents to represent the US in the International championships. Four worthy opponents of your admiration and high fives through the digital void.
Our Chief Merchant and US Representative in the 2012 International Championship, Scott Brown, graciously acted as the moderator and somehow kept his cool during the contestant’s impassioned play.
Two rounds were played in the hour long event. The Chiberian air was frigid, and as Scott mentioned, “Despite the chilly temperatures, one dude was breaking a sweat.” The game got intense as Scott and Val played their hearts out, though their hearts belonged to each other. Despite the battle, their marriage is by some miracle still happy and healthy, though the odds did not end up in their favor.
Peter, a renowned and respected store manager at Marbles: The Brain Store wasn’t going down without a fight. Being a Marbles store manager automatically labels you “One of the Brainiest,” and he was determined to keep his title. But, as Peter learned, we can’t always have our way.
It was down to the final minute of gameplay and you could cut the tension in the air with a knife. Ashley’s three children were actively engaged, cheering on their fearless mother, though it often became a little too intense for them as they climbed on top of mom, wishing her luck and sometimes causing a distraction. But through Ashley’s iron will, it was her that came out on top.
Please join us in congratulating Ashley Brown as she competes on Saturday, the 22nd from 2:30-6:00pm at the Chicago Toy and Game Fair to represent the good ol’ US of A in the International Rummikub Championships. Ashley, you’re already a champion to us. Knock their tiles off their racks!
