In the futuristic society of Frodis, the condemned are executed, but the society retains one aspect of its former days as a democracy: the condemned are allowed to choose one of three methods of execution. If they happen to survive their “punishment”, they are free to go, as long as they never set foot in Frodis again. Worker #99529 was sentenced to be executed for Thoughtcrimes against the State; it seems that 99529 was always thinking for himself, and was fomenting rebellion; an example must be made.
He was given the choice of entering one of 3 rooms. Behind Door #1, hundreds of metal blades would be shot out of concealed holes to brutally kill anyone who set foot inside. Behind Door #2, a trained executioner would quickly put a bullet in the head of anyone who set foot inside. Behind Door #3 was a room that a lion had been placed in; to make the torture greater, the lion had not been fed for over 2 years. 99529 made his choice, was free to go after surviving, and lived a nice long life on an island he sailed to.
Which door did he choose, and how did 99529 survive?

Yes, most commenters got it! #99529 chose Door #3, and escaped successfully because the lion would have died of starvation. Nobody claimed the society of Frodis to be especially humane….
