Riddle Me This….

We thought we’d challenge you, dear reader, with a brainteaser! Can you solve this conundrum?  Tell us your answer for a chance to win a Brain Tickler!  See below for details.

Prisoner’s Choice

The Prisoner

"I am not a number! I am a free man!"

In the futuristic society of Frodis, the condemned are executed, but the society retains one aspect of its former days as a democracy: the condemned are allowed to choose one of three methods of execution. If they happen to survive their “punishment”, they are free to go, as long as they never set foot in Frodis again.  Worker #99529 was sentenced to be executed for Thoughtcrimes against the State; it seems that 99529 was always thinking for himself, and was fomenting rebellion; an example must be made.

He was given the choice of entering one of 3 rooms. Behind Door #1, hundreds of metal blades would be shot out of concealed holes to brutally kill anyone who set foot inside. Behind Door #2, a trained executioner would quickly put a bullet in the head of anyone who set foot inside. Behind Door #3 was a room that a lion had been placed in; to make the torture greater, the lion had not been fed for over 2 years. 99529 made his choice, was free to go after surviving, and lived a nice long life on an island he sailed to.

Which door did he choose, and how did 99529 survive?

Answer:

Yes, most commenters got it! #99529 chose Door #3, and escaped successfully because the lion would have died of starvation. Nobody claimed the society of Frodis to be especially humane….

We’re thrilled with the response to our BrainTeaser! Look for more coming soon, and keep playing!

  1. Austin says:

Frodis Worker #99529 chose Door #2, because he knew there was no executioner behind it. How? Simple – he WAS the executioner!

  2. Matea Wasend says:

I think the lion is dead, since it hasn’t been fed for two years, so he probably chose door number 3.

  3. Raymond says:

Door #3, the lion would have died of starvation if it wasn’t fed for over 2 years.

  4. Robert says:

He chose door number 3 and survived because the lion was dead from starvation.

  5. Chris says:

I’d choose room 3. A lion that hasn’t been 2 years? He be dead.

  6. Sheri L. says:

Door #3 with the dead lion :)

  7. Christa Loss says:

He chose door #3. He survived because if the lion was not fed for two years it would be dead.

  8. David M says:

The starved lion in room number 3 sounds most appealing, what with the mammalian need to eat every so often.

  9. Derek B says:

Door #3! Lion to not be fed for 2 years, the #99529 could survive & was free to go as he pleased. :)

  10. Jennifer says:

He chose door #3 and survived because the lion was dead.

I also thought 3… but the whole rafflecopter thing is acting strange. Can you please be more clear about how to enter? Is it just a comment, or do you have to do the rafflecopter, facebook or twitter as well, or ??? Very confusing and has dropped me out of your past contests… I think you would have a LOT more entries if you just chose one single method of entry (ie, leave a comment in the blog). Just my 2 cents…

  12. angie says:

Hi Katje, thanks for the feedback. We use Rafflecopter so that we can pick a winner truly at random – it’s also an easy way to click back to Facebook or Twitter to make an entry. And we allow multiple ways to enter to give more choice to our readers. In the future, we’ll try to do a better job of explaining how it works. And if it doesn’t work for you, you can definitely just leave a comment as you normally would. We always check to be sure all the entries have been tallied by Rafflecopter before we choose a winner. If for some reason your entry didn’t make it into that system, we add it to the group before we pick a winner.

Thanks again for your feedback – if there’s something specific you can tell me about how it acted strangely for you, I’d love to know so that we can get it fixed or come up with a new method. You can contact me directly at angie@marblesthebrainstore.com. Thanks again for your feedback!
