Inside, Outside, Side-to-side, outside, inside, turn!
With summer right at our doorstep, cabin fever has begun to set in for those of us in the Brain Workshop. Knowing the only cure is to go play outside, we set to work on a fresh twist on an active play toy that has been enjoyed by children for generations. Our recent play testing at a local park proved that those nostalgic games have survived for good reason, they are super fun & beneficial at the same time!
For centuries, traditional Chinese jump roping has been a way for children to ring in the Chinese new year. But there is no need to wait until New Year’s Day because Marbles’ very own Chinese jump rope game, Skippity Do, arrives this summer!
Skippity Do features three high quality woven elastic bands in various sizes as well as instructions that will get you started on some of the classic Chinese jump rope patterns. Where you take it from there is really up to you and the possibilities are endless!
Skippity Do can be played with one or more players using just one elastic band or all three at the same time. One player stands in the center of the elastic loop, which is held either around the ankles of other players or by any sturdy object, like a chair. This jumper must then complete a series of specific footwork that sends them jumping over and around the ropes without pausing or misstepping. The jump rope moves can be recited, memorized, even set to a tune. All that matters is that you are working those large motor skills, memory, and coordination all at once!
