We had the opportunity to interview Ryan Jedlicka, the inventor of one of our newest games, Lutso! We had fun learning how he created at game that combines both critical thinking and visual perception skills.
Marbles: Congratulations on winning the 2011 Marbles Game Design Contest! What made you decide to enter the contest?
Ryan: My wife Kristin. She insisted that I should think up something for the contest so I brainstormed for a few minutes about what I did and didn’t like about strategy games and came up with the basic idea of Lutso pretty fast. Later that evening, I built a prototype and entered the contest.
Marbles: Lutso is an interesting name, how did you come up with it?
Ryan: Naming a game is tricky business. You’re naming something that didn’t exist before so the name is totally up to you and the sky’s the limit. Nothing popped into my head so I ended up using the pieces as letters and re-arranging them until I came up with something that looked like a name. I could have just as easily named it STULO or TULOS but those don’t have the same pun potential as LUTSO.Marbles: Have you ever lost a game of Lutso?
Ryan: Yes, twice. My wife and my co-worker Elisabeth are the only two people to beat me at my own game (so far).
Ryan:It has just been a blast to see people play this game and really enjoy it (unless they’re just pretending when I’m around).Marbles: Who is your favorite co-worker?
Ryan: Anyone with chocolate.
