World Alzheimer’s Day 2009

So, I was on vacation last week so this will be a week of catch up. I missed commenting on the World Alzheimer’s Day which was Sept 21st. The Alzheimer’s organization released a new report letting us all know that over 35 million people worldwide are living with dementia with a projection of 115 million by 2050. They also outline the costs associated with this growing epidemic– $315 billion annually. Here is a link to the report. The release also came with a call to action to write congress and let them know that this should be a national priority through the Alzheimer’s Breakthrough Act which will increase NIH funding by $2B and create a National Summit on Alzheimer’s. All of us at Marbles are touched by individuals and their caretakers suffering from this disease and thank those who are doing this very important research.

Mood disorders are gaetrly influenced by music. Depression stiffles brain activity. Music has been proven to help increase a persons levels of Serotonin, thus alleviating mental depression. Anxiety can also be alleviated with music. Music can play a crutial role in calming nerves and creating a sense of peace.Being a teacher by trade, I am very aware of, and have witnessed, the positive effects music can have on learners of all ages. Positive attitudes towards learning and motivation are just two benefits of using music to accompany learning. Study after study has shown that students have shown remakable academic improvements when using music to aid their studies.
