Watch out for fructose

I love summer cookouts and picnics, and this summer I am making sure to grill brain-boosting foods (grilled salmon for example) after yet another study reminded me how much what we eat impacts our brains. An article in Scientific American Mind last week describes a new study in which a high-fructose diet negatively impacted memory in rats. Studies on hamsters have also shown that insulin resistance can affect the hippocampus, a part of the brain critical to memory. Further research is underway to determine if glucose has the same effect.
